A Colorado City woman was killed Saturday when a pickup truck traveling the opposite direction drifted into her lane and hit her Ford Fiesta head-on, the Utah Highway Patrol reported.
Melody Young was headed eastbound on state Route 59 just east of Hurricane when a Ford F-250 pulling a two-axle trailer crossed over from the westbound lanes at approximately 4:40 p.m., according to a UHP report.
Young was killed on impact, according to the report. She was wearing a seatbelt and airbags were deployed.
The driver of the pickup truck, identified as Matteus De Gasperis of Hurricane, suffered a broken leg and was transported to Dixie Regional Medical Center for treatment.
Speeding was not suspected as a cause of the accident, according to the report, which indicates a preliminary investigation roused suspicions that the front left tire of the F-250 had tread separation, which caused the driver to brake and lose control. The tire was a spare and appeared to be 17 years old, according to the report.
The accident occurred near mile marker 18, near where SR-59 climbs a hillside east of Hurricane and heads toward Apple Valley, Hildale and Colorado City.
