Milos Raonic beat Thiemo de Bakker in 3 units to provide Canada a 1-0 merit over the Netherlands on Friday in Toronto in the primary rubber in their Davis Cup draw.
Raonic, from Thornhill, Ont., overpowered de Bakker 6-Three, 6-2, 6-2, depending on his giant serve for 21 aces to the Dutchman’s two.
Denis Shapovalov of Richmond Hill, Ont., confronted Robin Haase later Friday in the second one singles rubber of the World Group playoffs.
Toronto’s Daniel Nestor and Vancouver’s Vasek Pospisil will crew up on Saturday in the doubles rubber, going through Matwe Middelkoop and Jean-Julien Rojer.
The singles matchups will turn on Sunday, with Raonic taking part in Haase and Shapovalov taking over de Bakker.
Raonic is the top-ranked Canadian at the ATP Tour, emerging as much as No. 20 international after his run to the fourth spherical on the U.S. Open at first of September.
